So Rudy was scamming the auction house people, the high end buyer and all the experts out there with completely made up vintages!!!!īut like I said earlier, Rudy was so charismatic and charming (and knowledgeable) that many of his friends didn't really care that they got scammed.
The whole reason Rudy got busted because he was selling a certain type of wine from a vineyard that didn't produce that variety until years later. And I'm not just talking about getting scammed by fake wine in a 70 year old bottle.

The movie really shines a light on how so many so called experts we so easily scammed. In one scene in the movie, one of his friends is raving about some great old wine that he got from Rudy that was the "definitely the genuine article", and he gets busted on camera for actually drinking a fake wine that Rudy created himself. Rudy was a super charismatic and charming guy who was beloved by his wine friends, even after they learned that they were victims of his scam.
He also ended up making/mixing these classic vintages in his kitchen and selling millions of dollars in fraudulent wines to high end auction houses. It's an amazing story of an amazing character with an amazing palate and an amazing knowledge of rare, old wines.
